Lead by bilingual songwriter Magali Meagher, The Phonemes’ haunting melodies and enchanting stories have inspired audience sing alongs from Tofino to Paris. Magali has sung her way across North America and Europe with Owen Pallett, Bob Wiseman, Basia Bulat, Laura Barrett, and The Hidden Cameras; she has backed up American indie icon Daniel Johnston on drums, and opened Kids in the Hall Scott Thompson’s “Scottastrophe” tour. She’s also a member of the all-girl Weezer cover band Sheezer, 60’s-girl-pop-inspired outfit HANK, and sometimes performs with John Tielli’s Metal Kites. Magali has also performed a live soundtrack to Guy Maddin’s Cowards bend the knee and played the lead in Maggie MacDonald’s musical The Rat King Rock Opera, which sold out two runs in Toronto, and was remounted Off-Broadway in 2007 at The Lucille Lortel Theatre. The Phonemes album There’s something we’ve been meaning to do which was recorded by Efrim Menuck (A Silver Mt. Zion, Godspeed you black emperor) at thee mighty hotel2tango (Arcade Fire, Vic Chesnutt), and is available from Blocks Recording Club.

YOUR NECK OF THE WOODS:
myspace.com/yourneckofthewoodsmusic
Your Neck of the Woods sound like all of the places and spaces of folk music: front-porch pickin’ and backyard hoedowns, the boreal forest and urban sprawl, lonesome railroads and lost highways, ballads and singalongs, broken hearts and true love. Based in Guelph, Your Neck of The Woods have already released one EP and amazed audiences with their unqiue blend of alt-country and folk. The band features Tom Schiks (guitar/banjo/vocals/washboard), Ben Doerksen (guitar/vocals), Mark Romeril (violin), Nicole Bilyea (mandolin/vocals/guitar), Julia Stead (drums), and Dave Riedstra (bass). Don’t miss the chance to check out one of Guelph’s best new bands.

BETTY BURKE:

Playing AM radio hits from a parallel universe, Betty Burke evokes darker images of transient and unsettled relationships between people and their environments, and situations of opportunity and despair. Founded by novelist and songwriter Maggie MacDonald (The Hidden Cameras, Republic of Safety, The Barcelona Pavilion), Betty Burke includes multitalented musician/publisher/activists Jo Snyder and Sheila Sampath on guitar, bass and organ. Formerly of bands CN Power and The Airfields, Sheila is the Art and Editorial Director of Shameless Magazine; the magazine’s Editor, Jo Snyder, spent ten years touring with Winnipeg-based punk bands Sixty Stories and Anthem Red, and continues to tour as a solo performer. Betty Burke’s first EP The Dirty Mouth of The St Lawrence River, recorded with producer James Bunton (Ohbijou, Diamond Rings), will released with Blocks Recording Club in January 2011.
